And here is where the magic started to happen… We are Nodes EntranceSteam Hotel Hotel Room We are Nodes Lounge 2 Steam Hotel Hotel Room We are Nodes Lounge 2Steam Hotel We are Nodes RestaurantSteam Hotel We are Nodes Sign

LIVETSLIV!Steam Hotel Spa We are Nodes 2017

A Palma Weekend in 26 Photos

    Written by: Yasmin

Recently, I (Yasmin) spent an amazing weekend in Palma de Mallorca. The trip was a birthday gift from my boyfriend so I can’t take any credz for the great choice of hotel or destination, that was all him! But what I can do is to sum up our vacation and share our best recommendations with all you Palma enthusiasts (hej alla svenskar!). I noticed that there was an upcoming Palma trip added to our travel community, so I hope our members get some use for this updated Palma guide. A detailed review of the amazing Hotel Saratoga can be found on the blog, but here are some other bits and pieces of what we did during our stay. Also, one of the perks of having a travel blog is that one can read up on the other half of We are Nodes’ previous trip to Palma (read Sheida’s epic Palma guide here). So, we combined lil sis’ best advice with some newly researched restaurants and must-dos, and here’s how we experienced Palma in pictures!

    Hotel Saratoga

This hotel, with its amazing rooftop pool and terrace, deserves its own blog post, but we spent a great deal of time here. Rooftops is where I find my zen, so we took every chance we got to sneak up for a drink or a swim. Check out the detailed review of the hotel here. Practical information

Tahini Sushi Bar in Puerto Portals

If you fancy Asian fusion food, Tahini is the place to go. You can reserve a table through their website, and the staff will call you up to confirm your booking in advance. Ask for a table in their beautiful outdoor patio. Tahini is located Puerto Portals, a 15-minute drive from Palma city (taxi costs about 20 euros one way). Start off with a nice dinner at Tahini, and continue the evening by strolling around in Puerto Portals, and sneak into any of the nice bars for a drink or two. The food at Tahini is delicious; do not to miss the veal and truffle sushi (24.50 euro), it was to die for! We can also recommend the salmon sashimi (23.50 euro) and salmon tartar (19.00 euro) as starters. Practical information

    Puro Beach Palma

I got strict instructions from by little sister to reserve a sun bed at Puro Beach and spend a full day there. Since I’ve read her detailed guide, I knew that Puro was my type of place. A sunbed by the pool costs 45 euros for a day (remember to be you there before 12.00, otherwise they’ll let your reservation go), and then you spend at least double the amount on snacks, drinks and food during the day. It’s not cheap, but as in many other cases, you pay for the ambiance.

However, having spent hours at the Saratoga rooftop pool the day before, I compared Puro with Saratoga’s more relaxed setting, and first I felt a bit stressed by the waitors walking up to you all the time, and the scene itself.  But, time flies when you’re at a beach club next to the beautiful ocean, and it was acutally super nice to hang out there the whole day; reading books, drinking rosé wine, eating at their restaurant (the food was really good!) and swimming. On the downside, I was a bit disapointed by the low music volume that day (not sure if there was anything wrong with the speakers), but we would have hoped for more “pumpy” setting when the day turned into evening.

    Cala Comtesa beach

Another one of my sister’s advice was to visit the Cala Comtesa beach in Illetes. Said and done, a 30-minute bus trip with bus #3 for 1,50 euro (one way) later, we stepped out of the bus at the end station Illetes. Here’s the important part; do not follow the people that are walking towards the beach on the left hand side. Follow the street to the right to get to Cala Comtesa. As Sheida mentioned in her blog post, the restaurant at the Cala Comtesa beach is better suited for drinks and snacks rather than food, so bring your own picnic and enjoy a full day at this magical beach. The water is SO CLEAR AND GREEN, and life can’t be anything else than good when being on this nice beach.

    Enjoying the city

Since one of this trip’s missions was to make me embrace the CarpeYolo-lifestyle, we left a couple evenings and days unplanned to just walk around in the city, sneak into different restaurants for tapas and drinks, eat icecream etc. One highlight was our stop at a restaurant with live music next to the harbour, where we got to join salsa entusiasts on the dance floor. I didn’t catch any photos of that specific happening, but here are some other highlights from our trip:

Two different risottos to share at tapas bar U-10 on C/ De la Unió.

Walking around in Palma and enjoying the nice evening vibe.

A well-deserved ice cream stop, see how happy he is!

Drinks at the Abaco bar on Calle San Juan 1 in Palma city. Even though it’s a classic amongst tourists, it’s still worth a visit. It’s forbidden to take photos, but the interior, with a bunch of flowers, birds and cool furniture, is fun to experience. Try the Amaretto Sour!

Check out Sheida’s Palma travel guide if you’re interested in more Palma tips (the Swedish version is found on Travellink: http://blogg.travellink.se/6-parlor-i-palma-de-mallorca/).  Make sure not to miss the detailed review of Hotel Saratoga!

Afternoon Tea At Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten, Hamburg

This trip was made in collaboration with Hamburg Tourism and NordicTB.

With a couple of hours left until my flight back to Stockholm, I (Sheida) decided to go for a walk along the Alster Lake, followed by a traditional Afternoon Tea at the renowned Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Join us as we try their award-winning Afternoon Tea with one of Hamburg’s most well-read tea masters!

A Grand Luxery Hotel in the Heart of Hamburg

Seeing it was Sunday, freezing, and most of the shops were closed, an afternoon spent in front of an open fire with a warming cup of tea felt like a good idea. During the walking tour the previous day (read our full Hamburg guide here), our guide Tomas Kaiser told us a lot about the coffee and tea export in Hamburg, so I was inspired to go for a tea- tasting or doing some sort of activity involving tea.

After some research, my choice finally fell on a proper English Afternoon Tea at Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten on Neuer Jungfernstieg 9-14. The Wohnhalle, where the Afternoon Tea is served daily between 2.00 pm-6.00 pm, has been awarded with the “Golden Teacup” twice for best regional tea culture amongst high-class gastronomic establishments. Surely, they must know their tea.

    Enter Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten

If you’ve been to a Fairmont Hotel before, you already know that they are breathtaking, but during Christmas time the atmosphere is magical – and Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Hamburg was by no means an exception!

Since I was a bit early, the friendly staff where kind enough to give me a little private tour of the hotel while waiting for the clock to strike tea time. I was led through a common area into a beautiful hall where the staff were in the midst of preparing the final touches for the annual children’s Teddy Bear Tea, that was about to start later the same afternoon. Every Sunday starting from November 27th to December 19th (2.00 pm- 6 pm), Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten hosts a “Afternoon Tea” for the children where they can enjoy a buffet, participate in various crafting activities, play with all the toys and expect a visit from Santa.

I must admit, I wouldn’t mind staying there longer… just look at the beautiful floor to ceiling windows with the blue shimmering lights!

    Afternoon Tea – Christmas Edition

At two o’ clock I was back in the Wohnhalle; comfortably seated in my armchair and ready for some tea. While overlooking the beautiful view of Inner Alster Lake, and listening to the pleasant sparkles from the fireplace closeby, I was already enjoying my visit. I had the pleasure to be served by a really service-minded, friendly and, above all, knowledgeable tea-master, who was a big reason for why my visit became so memorable and why I so warmly can recommend it to others.

I decided to go for the traditional Queen Victoria Afternoon Tea (59 euro) which included scones with clotted cream, a variation of savouries, such as roast beef with truffle remoulade, salmon with horseradish, egg salad with cress, cucumber with cream cheese, cakes and biscuits created by created by Christoph Rüffers, head of Haerlin Restaurant and of course lots and lots of tea.

Hotel Review | Van Der Valk Schiphol, Amsterdam

Stuck at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, at nine o clock on Sunday evening, with the first flight leaving the next morning is not exactly the ideal situation when you should be at work on Monday morning. Let’s just say that there comes a time for each traveller when the travel plans take unexpected turns. Bad weather conditions, flight delays and technical issues are just some of the external factors that can cause you to have to rearrange your schedule and spend those extra hours at a so called airport hotel. On this late March evening, We Are Nodes didn’t have any other choice but to explode the myth about those airport hotels once and for all:

Airport Business Hotel – Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4

After an hour and a half of waiting at the airport, we were finally on the shuttle bus taking us to Hotel Schiphol A4, our stay for the night. Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4 is a partner hotel of the Dutch airline company KLM, meaning this is the place that you must likely will end up on if KLM cancels your Amsterdam-flight. Never having spent the night at an airport hotel before, we must admit that we weren’t exactly thrilled. Checking in to a hotel in the middle of nowhere with no luggage probably isn’t high on any travellers list.

    First impression

A fifteen to twenty minute drive later, the bus stopped outside of a large building with the hotel sign glowing in the dark. From the outside it didn’t look for much, but as soon as we got in to the hotel lobby we got a pleasant surprise. With a large reception area, friendly and helpful staff and a welcoming interior, we immediately got a warm and positive feeling. This airport hotel didn’t look like anything like the old concrete building with “cell-block” hotel rooms we had pictured in our heads.

    IMG_1952IMG_1956One of the hotel lobbies.

Late night buffets and early breakfasts

The first thing we noticed just when were about to stand in line to check-in was that the dinner buffet still was open. Not thinking twice, we decided to skip the queue and hit the buffet instead. Turned out to be a good choice! A wide selection of warm and cold food, desserts, beverages and above all, a serene ambience with lit candles everywhere was exactly what we needed after a really long day. If it wasn’t for the fact that the clock already was past eleven p.m, we would easily have spent a couple of more hours here.

With an early flight the following morning, we also had time to enjoy the breakfast that opened as early as 05.00 a.m. The perfect way to start the day!IMG_1946

    The Room

Checking in late turned out to be a good idea as we were given two of the newly built “I Am Superior” rooms and were the first guests to get to sleep in the comfy new Hypnos beds (which were voted bed of the year in 2012!). An other positive thing that struck us was that the rooms at Van Der Valk were quite spacious for thinking European-standards. Besides the large and comfortable twin bed, the I Am Suprior Rooms also had a big balcony, a desk and a sitting area.van der walk schiphol we are nodes IMG_1966IMG_1968 IMG_1961IMG_1965IMG_1992

The semi open-plan bathroom is a growing trend at many hotels, and while it definitely adds a cool “Ibiza vibe” to the interior it also means that you can forget about privacy.
In other words, you should be comfortable with your travelling companion if you are planning to share a room. But style goes before functionality right? IMG_1994 IMG_1989 IMG_1991

    Hotel Amneties

Wellness area: The Schiphol A4 has a large wellness area with both an gym overlooking the garden and an indoor swimming pool with a relaxing area.
Garden: The perks of not being a hotel in the middle of a city is that there is a big garden where you can do outdoor sports or go for a walk.
Working spaces and meeting rooms: For the business traveller there are plenty of quiet corners where you can sit and work, or rooms that can be booked to have meetings or seminars.
Conferences & events: The hotel has a floor area of 2.000 m2 that can be used for fairs, conference rooms and are experienced organizers of weddings and parties.

    Final Words

For being a four star hotel outside Amsterdam city center, Hotel Van der Valk Schiphol A4 surely blew our expectations! The next time We are Nodes are stuck in Amsterdam, will be more than happy to be back! And hopefully not in such a hurry.
